13 M. Several trains daily. For fares, time of departure, etc., consult the Railway Time Table. -- There is a good auto road between the two places. Tamsui (or Tansui) is also accessible by boat from Daidotei on the Tamsui River.

From Taihoku the train runs out through the N. suburb, passes Maruyama Park (right), then crosses the Tamsui River. At (7 M.) Hokuto (Chinese, Paktau) there is a locally celebrated Hot Spring, ofttimes the objective point of excursions from the capital.

The traveler so inclined can see it between trains and lose but little time. One follows the main street through the rather unkempt town until one sees steam rising from the vicinity of the spring (far left). At a point about 5 min. (on foot) from the station the road forks. Continuing to the right one proceeds (40 min.) out through the town to the edge of a gulch where there is a bath-house overlooking a deep depression whence steam rises. The spot is called Yumoto. Some 2 M. beyond it, in a burned-out cone in the Daiton Range, there is some volcanic activity, and a few bubbling mud springs.

From Hokuto the rly. continues across rice-paddies to (9 M.) Kantau, beyond which a tunnel is threaded before the line parallels the Tamsui River -- which here, at certain seasons, is almost as wide as the Ohio at Cincinnati.

12 M. Tamsui (or Hobe), is a poor town in a fine situation overlooking the river and the sea. Anciently it was the greatest of the island ports. Some Dutch and Spanish fortresses built during the 17th century stand as mute reminders of its former greatness. The Spaniards erected a trading station here in 1629, and a church dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary), but the Dutch ousted them from it in 1642. Considerable tea is grown on the environing hills. An occasional Chinese junk loads here for the mainland, and from time to time one sees small, mediaeval-looking craft with bizarre sails beating up the river toward the capital.

The Chinese inhabitants of Tamsui are not definitely addicted to cleanliness, and the stranger will find little in the town to repay him for the time spent in inspecting it. The old ruins are in a dilapidated state, and the walks in the neighborhood are less interesting than those around Taihoku.
淡水の中国人住民は、清潔好きとは言いがたい。旅行者は、この町を見て回るために費やす時間に見合うものを、町の中にはほとんど見いだせないだろう。古い遺跡は荒廃した状態にあり、近隣の散策も台北周辺の散策ほど興味深くはない。
