Manchuria; or Land of the Manchus, a healthy, fertile, billowy country with a fine, temperate climate, vast riches and a promising future, is rapidly being developed and modernized by the capable and progressive Japanese. A great factor in this development is the South Manchuria Railway, originally constructed by the Chinese Eastern Rly. Co. as a link in the trans-Siberian Rte., but acquired by Japan from Russia at the close of the Japan-Russia War. Under the present able Japanese management the rapidly spreading system has become one of the great highways of the world, and it is as modern, as safe, and as dependable as the best American railway. Fast express trains, commodious sleeping-cars and luxurious dining-cars are features of the line, the employees of which speak English and Russian.

The country which the line (4' 8½", — standard gauge) traverses is one of the most interesting and diversified in the Far East. It contains many attractions for the tourist. In few places can one see so many bizarre human types unchanged by the modern rly. and living their lives in an environment as medieval and picturesque. During the strenuous Japan-Russia War battles as momentous as any recorded in history were fought over this smiling country, and the tablets and monuments erected and preserved by the order-loving, thoughtful Japanese are of imperishable interest to the average traveler. The memorable sieges of Port Arthur in 1894 and 1904, and the thrilling assaults and capture (Nov.-Dec. 1904) of 203 Metre Hill, by the intrepid Nipponese, have made of the region one of the most interesting and instructive of the world's battle-fields. Port Arthur is filled with mementoes of that titanic struggle, and each year sees more and more travelers on the broad highway which now leads from the port to the monument-crowned summit of 203 Metre Hill. Aside from its many historic sights, its lovely parks and fine buildings, Port Arthur is fast gaining an enviable reputation as a health resort. Surrounded on three sides by sheltering hills, facing, on the south, the broad Gulf of Pechili, it possesses a peculiarly benign and balmy climate — one increasingly enjoyed by invalids from all parts of the world. The attractive, well-managed, comfortable hotel; the excellent shooting in the immediate neighborhood; the delightful boating, bathing and fishing; the many walks and drives across the wonderful old battle-fields, and the unusual picturesqueness of the port make a strong appeal. It is often referred to as the healthiest town in all Manchuria. —

Ogondai, or Golden Hill, which guards the entrance to Port Arthur's landlocked harbor, overlooks an adorable little stretch of sand known as Golden Beach — a celebrated resort for Russian officialdom in times gone by.

Among the best known are those at Hsiungyaocheng (Onsen Hotel, ¥3 to 6, Am. Pl., English spoken) 110 M. north of Dairen, and 136 M. south of Mukden. The railway sells special excursion tickets at reduced rates. The Tangkangtzu Springs (Seirinkan Hotel, ¥4 to 6, Am. Pl. English spoken), are 181 M. north of Dairen and 65 M. south of Mukden. Chienshan (The Thousand Hills), a striking mt. range about 8 M. east of Tangkangtzu, is known far and wide as the Beauty Spot of Manchuria. Among the hills are many lovely vales and glens containing quaint old temples, brawling cataracts, picturesque rocks, caverns, petroglyphs and other ecclesiological relics. In the spring and early summer the region is converted into a sort of floral fairyland worth going far to see. A host of wonderful wild flowers deck the hillsides, hundreds of birds of gorgeous plumage sing in unison with the music of rippling streams, and the foaming waters which dash down through the green ravines break into spray and drench the surrounding verdure with a myriad rainbow jewels. All the indescribably quaint Buddhist temples belong to the Zen Sect (see p. cxcix) and some of them date from 1004 (during the reign of the Sung Dynasty). The finest among them are the Lungchüanssu (Dragon Fountain Temple), the Taanssu (Temple of Great Peace), and the Chunghuissu (Temple of the Middle Junction). The Wulian (Temple of Munificence) is the finest (architecturally) of the score or more Taoist temples. From the terrace facing the atrium of certain of these structures one can obtain views of wonderful extent and beauty. The priests and bonzes attached to the temples live calm monastic lives of simplicity and peace.

Guides to accompany one to the region can be obtained from the station agent at Chienshan or Tangkangtzu, or, better still, from the manager of the Seirinkan Hotel. He will also arrange to send coolies in advance with bedding and provisions for those who might like to spend a night in one of the temples. One or two days are sufficient for the 18-20 miles trip — which should not cost more than 14-15 yen.

English is spoken in all of them, the rooms, service and food are good, and the rates are moderate. Certain of them are strikingly palatial in character, and in size and appointments they remind the traveler of the best American hotels. Those located at Mukden, Dairen, Changchun, and Ryojun, all go by the name Yamato Hotel (Tel. add: 'Yamato'). The rates in each are the same: Single room, European Plan, from ¥3 and up; Breakfast, ¥1.75; Tiffin, ¥2.50; Dinner ¥3. The charming Yamato Hotel at Hoshigaura, near Dairen, will remind the experienced traveler of some of the beautiful hostelries along the southern California coast.

The inquiring traveler will find much valuable information in the series of handsomely illustrated booklets with maps, issued free (in English) by the Publicity Department of the Rly. Obtainable at any of the company's offices or those of the Japan Tourist Bureau, Thos. Cook & Son, or the Nordisk Resebureau. Tickets are on sale at these offices. — Japanese Money (comp. p. xviii) is the best circulating medium in Manchuria.

Antung (Inns: Gempo-kwan: Fukuzumi, both ¥5), 23 M. from the mouth of the Yalu, is a river port of increasing importance. Pop. 6000. The old Chinese town, Shahochen, has 35,000 inhabs. The luggage of through travelers is not molested at the Custom-house. Ships of the Osaka Shosen Kaisha leave at regular intervals for Korea coast ports and Japan (Osaka ¥71.75).

The Mukden-Antung Branch of the South Manchuria Rly. runs N. over a pretty country. (25 M.) Wulungpei is noted for its alkaline mineral springs. (37 M.) Feng-Huang-Cheng, with an 18th cent. castle, was the base of operations for the Japanese army in the Japan-China War of 1894-5, and the Japan-Russia War of 1904-5. Beyond (92 M.) Lienshankuan, the scenery becomes wild and picturesque, culminating in grandeur near (114 M.) Chiaotu, where Angler's Hill and the Hsi River are conspicuous features. (123 M.) Penchihu, on the Taitze River, has coal and iron mines, pottery kilns, and a mysterious subterranean lake (whence the place takes its name) in a series of caves in a beautiful limestone gorge (above the town).

Mukden is one of the largest skin and fur markets of the world, and it is the curio-collector's delight. The native shops are many and attractive. Bargaining necessary. For centuries Mukden was the home of the Ching or Manchu Dynasty which despotically ruled China for 267 years. The old Chinese Commercial Museum, the Temples, Palaces and Imperial Tombs are all interesting.

The Overland Route to Peking. The Peking-Mukden Railway of the Imperial Chinese Gov't runs daily trains hence to (520 M.) Peking, via Shanhaikwan and Tientsin. The rly. is the connecting link in the overland trip from Japan to Shanghai, now offered as an alternative to travelers over the transpacific steamship lines mentioned at p. xi et seq.

The Kobe-Korea-North-China Line of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha makes of Dairen a regular port of call; as do also the ships (2 times a month) of the Osaka Shosen Kaisha's Osaka-Dairen Line (fare Osaka to Dairen, ¥48, 1st cl.; ¥34, 2d cl. — cheaper on certain ships).

Ryojun), 37 M. west of Dairen (frequent trains in 1½ hr.), the scene, during the Japan-Russia War, of one of the most sanguinary and decisive struggles in history, contains much of interest to the traveler. The shell-scarred forts, the old battle-fields, towers, monuments, military museums, etc. are described in detail in the guidebooks above mentioned. From Mukden express trains of the South Manchuria Rly. run N.E. to the line's terminus at 189 M. (438 from Dairen) Changchun, whence the Chinese Eastern Rly. proceeds N. to (152 M.) Harbin.

The Trans-Siberian Railway. This comes into Harbin from (729 versts at the E.) Vladivostok (comp. p. 546), then stretches W. to (7402 versts, or about 4900 M.) Moscow, beyond which it extends through Poland and connects with the rly. systems of Germany, France, and Belgium. Steamers carry travelers across the Channel to England (London 8700 M. from Yokohama; from Moscow 1890).

Travel between Europe and Japan via Siberia is being gradually resumed, but conditions are still unstable, and before undertaking the trip one should consult an official of the Japan Tourist Bureau, or Thos. Cook & Son — by whom tickets are on sale, and from whom descriptive literature can be obtained. Passports and proper visés should not be overlooked.

The most popular (and most satisfactory in many ways) route is the one via Fusan (in Korea; good railway service and dining and sleeping cars) and the Straits of Shimonoseki (9 hours by water, which can be made at night on good ships), thence by the Imperial Japanese Government Railways (excellent in almost every detail).
