84 M. Several fast trains daily in about 4 hrs. - From Beppu southward the line runs through the important towns of (93 M. from Moji) Oita, (132 M.) Saeki, and (220 M.) Miyazaki before turning W. to (290 M.) Yoshimatsu, and (330 M.) Kagoshima (see p. 676).
全行程84マイル。毎日数本の快速列車があり、所要は約4時間である。別府から南へは、この路線は門司から93マイルの大分、132マイルの佐伯、220マイルの宮崎という重要な町を通り、その後西へ曲がって290マイルの吉松、330マイルの鹿児島へ向かう（676ページ参照）。

The widely celebrated Yabakei Gorge, a feature of the region traversed by this line, is best reached by a branch line rly. from (38 M. from Moji) Unoshima Station. At (11 M.) Yabakei Station, motor-cars and other vehicles are available at moderate prices. The entire region is famous for its wild and rugged beauty. At certain seasons there are superb floral displays and other attractions. There are a number of good Inns at moderate prices.
この路線が通る地域の名物である、広く名高い耶馬渓へは、門司から38マイルの宇ノ島駅から分岐線鉄道で行くのが最もよい。11マイル先の耶馬渓駅では、自動車その他の乗り物をほどほどの料金で利用できる。この地域全体は、荒々しく険しい美しさで有名である。季節によっては見事な花の眺めやその他の見どころがある。料金の手ごろな良い宿もいくつかある。
The traveler with but little time at his disposal can arrange with the manager of the Sanyo Hotel at Shimonoseki for a motor-car that will take him through the Yabakei District for a nominal price. For detailed information regarding it consult the Rly. Folders and the Japan Tourist Bureau.

At 56 M. (from Moji) Usa Station one descends to reach the group of Shrines known as the Usa Hachimangu, dedicated to the Empress Jingu.
門司から56マイルの宇佐駅で下車すると、神功皇后を祀る宇佐八幡宮として知られる社殿群へ行くことができる。
The traveler who wishes to get a good idea of Kyushu can follow Rte. 41 (p. 671) from Moji to Kagoshima and return via Aso-san, Beppu and Rte. 43 (p. 692), or he can reverse the trip. Or he can (consult p. 692) go from Moji to Beppu, thence via Miyazaki and Yoshimatsu, to Kagoshima, and return via Kumamoto direct.
九州の全体像をよくつかみたい旅行者は、門司から鹿児島までRoute 41（671ページ）をたどり、阿蘇山、別府、Route 43（692ページ）経由で戻ることができるし、その逆回りも可能である。あるいは、門司から別府へ行き（692ページ参照）、そこから宮崎、吉松経由で鹿児島へ進み、帰路は熊本経由でまっすぐ戻ることもできる。
